The New Media and Cybercultures Anthology Book Review

This cyberculture studies book is a collection of online and social media related research into human and computer interaction as well as online human behavior. The topics covered in this book include immersion, online identity, disembodiment, geo-location, mobile, human engagement and video games but there are other subjects covered that you might find interesting. I think this a really good read for both students and professionals who are entering into the online realm, I believe there’s more to it than just marketing and this book will help introduce you.

Mobile LatAm 2012 Emphasizes Importance of Mobile Technology in Latin America

Mobile Opportunities in Latin America

Strong mobile opportunities lie in Latin America

All studies posted online show that Latin Americans can access online quicker, learn the latest technology faster and are early adopters of the latest technology and mobile technology such as smartphones and tablets being at the top of the list. So far, online media related organizations such as LATISM and Hispanicize have illustrated these trends but the latest event known as Mobile LatAm 2012 fully focuses on the mobile industry and how Latin Americans are fully utilizing it, thus opening up new opportunities within the Latin American market.

According to the website, Mobile LatAm is considered is the first conference and expo of its kind to focus on the tremendous mobile opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean.  It is designed to give you the tools to develop a Latin American business strategy and successful partnerships. Professionals from North and South America will network in a relaxed atmosphere on beautiful Miami Beach, the gateway to Latin America.

From the list of speakers presenting at the event, I think the seminars will offer current information that will be vital in creating not only mobile marketing campaigns but also mobile apps that will be ultimately be used by the Latin American consumer and the free workshops presented there will be an added bonus.

The IT Expo, which is held Jan 31-Feb 3, 2012 is a tech related event that brings together over 7000 professionals globally including over 1000 from Latin American countries. I believe that you can register on their website.

Mobile LatAm is scheduled February 1-3, 2012 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. You can register at the website.

Coqui the Chef Helps Teach Healthy Cooking with KickStarter

Coqui the Chef

Coqui the Chef Is using Kickstarter to help teach the community about healthy cooking.

In an early post, I blogged about Tania Lopez and her pursuits in creating a community organization based on the promotion of nutrition and healthy cooking with Coqui the Chef. She was successfully able to use online media to spread her message of her intended goals. Now Tania is moving to the next level by using Kickstarter to reach a wider audience. Kickstarter is considered the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects where people freely pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, film, art, technology, design, food, publishing and other creative fields. With Kickstarter, you can invest up to $5 or more, the more money you invest the more you will receive as a reward for contributing by the project creator, this includes products or public credit.

With Kickstarter, Tania hopes to continue expanding her passion of health and nutrition with projects that needs help funding. Below is her mission statement for Coqui the Chef:

Our mission to teach our kids about healthy eating and fun cooking with cooking demos in your community, participation in health fairs/carnivals, visits to public schools, and much more. By pledging, you help Coqui The Chef spread the message about healthy eating and fun cooking with cooking demos for local communities, participation in health fairs/carnivals, visit to public schools, and much more.

Perhaps you can help Tania in fulfilling her goals. You contribute as little or as much as you want, all for a great cause. I wish her the best of luck and continued success!

Kmart’s Madres Y Comadres Online Media Campaign Targets Latinas for Christmas

Madres y COmadres

Maria Fernanda Rodriguez and Loren Escandon are the main actresses in the Madres y Comadres webnovela series by Kmart.

I was presented with this online video campaign by Akua Harris of ICED Media and I thought it was a great example of utilizing various online media platforms to target a particular Hispanic niche market with creativity, culture and most importantly, research.

Madres y Comadres (Mothers and Wives) is an eight-part original Spanish language webnovela campaign on YouTube that uses humor and the Christmas season to tap into the unique challenges that Latina women and their families face today, which is their focus throughout the campaign.

Planning to Reach the Latino Market Online? Get the Professionals to Help

Espanol Internet Marketing

Espanol Internet Marketing

Companies who do plan to expand their business to the Latino market will find great opportunities but there will be some challenges when first developing a campaign or even online marketing strategies to start attracting clients or customers. Doing it on your own may not be the best option because the Spanish language and culture is a challenge to translate for your potential target market.

I like to promote Latino based businesses on my blog and I happened to get in touch with one agency that helps out with online Latino marketing. Their information is below.

EspanolInternetMarketing.com is a division of WebitMD Inc, a full service Internet Marketing Agency based in San Diego, CA. We have offices in Los Angeles, CA and Baja California, Mexico as well. This division works with businesses both in the USA and Mexico and target their Internet Marketing efforts at English and Spanish speaking users. They develop and execute comprehensive online marketing strategies for multi-scale businesses and they have worked with a wide array of companies from start ups to international organizations.

Espanol Internet Marketing offers SEO, Pay per click Management, Website Design and Translation services all in English and Spanish. This allows clients to reach the Hispanic communities who are searching online in Spanish. The staff are all bilingual and understand the Hispanic culture as well. This serves them well for our marketing strategies. If you have any questions about hispanic marketing strategies feel free to contact them.

Multimedia Interactivity Helps With Bilingual Education

This video is a great example of how multimedia interactivity can help educate young children in a second language. This is my very adorable niece, Olivia, she is only 1 year old and she’s already understanding how to spell in Spanish using the iPad app, First Words Spanish. I believe that technology such as tablets can be utilized for a full media experience with sound, image and interaction in education. Mobile and touchscreen technology not only offers a more immersive experience but it attracts, stimulates, and retain learners with application simulations, particularly at a young age. It does seem logical because younger children do learn from touching, tasting and hearing when it comes to developing the association of word with objects. Using bilingual apps, younger children will have the ability to comprehend two languages. In this case, my niece is learning Spanish and English at the same time.

After a couple of weeks, Olivia developed the ability to operate the tablet by turning the “on” switch and interacting with the touch screen by pressing the displayed icons as well as performing finger swiping motions to transition to the next scene on the tablet screen, for a 1 year old to accomplish this level of user experience is pretty amazing but it’s not the first time this has happened as I think of a viral video with a similar situation.

Instructional Technology, Edutainment and Serious Games are being studied and slowly implemented into the education system as complements to traditional education with some positive results. At the university level, virtual worlds such as Second Life are being used to complement the physical classroom.

What do you think? Should multimedia interactivity be introduced to children at a much younger age? Should more multimedia interactivity be added in modern education?

LATISM Low Down Day Three

Here are the tweets that I curated from the third and final day of the LATISM 2011 Conference in Chicago. Though I wasn’t there at the conference myself I thoroughly enjoyed the tweets that were posted these paste two days. I was able to read not only the information heard from guests but also the emotions expressed when they socialized with one another. A perfect example of online to offline community engagement. In a way I was also there thanks to a very basic form of telepresence. Overall, guests really enjoyed the conference and especially those that are new to the concept of digital media, social media and online human engagement. You can also see the second day of tweets.

This is great news! I’m very excited to find out that LATISM (Latinos in Social Media), an organization founded by Ana Roca-Castro that supports the online Latino community,  will have a Dallas chapter beginning on October 26 with an evening Tweetup. The Tweetup is called Breaking Ground: Lessons and Learnings in Business and it is presented by Elba Intriago, Partner at Inspire! Ad Agency, and Juan Mena, owner of Metroplex Banquet Staffing.

I like to thank Byrdie Franco and Alejandra Suarez for putting together the Dallas chapter of LATISM. The goal of this chapter is to support the ongoing mission of LATISM at the local level.
