LATISM Low Down Day Two

Judging from what I’ve been seeing on Twitter, the second day of the LATISM conference in Chicago was a complete success. I wish I was there but thanks to todays social media technology myself and others who couldn’t make it as well can watch the presentations live stream on LATISM’s website or read content coming from Twitter. It seems like everybody enjoyed the event. Below are some great news, tips and ideas that I curated from the Tweets. If you want to follow along on Twitter go to the hashtags #latism or #latism11. For more information about the conference, go to LATISM’s website. Go see the third day of tweets.

Social Networking and New Media Journalism Panel Discussion

DFW Hispanic Communicators

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to be part of a panel discussion held by DFW Hispanic Communicators. The topics of discussion were social networking and new media journalism. I was very excited since this was my first ever panel and a little nervous. Other members of the panel were Byrdie Franco acting as mediator, Veronica Torres, Director of Social Media Marketing and Community Relations at Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau and Teevee Aquirre, seo and internet marketing consultant.

We each brought our experiences to the table and the audience seemed very impressed by what we have to say about the growing online media landscape. One half of the audience were professionals who would like to shift to online media while the other half were University of North Texas journalism and advertising students preparing to go out into the real world. It took me about a week before the panel, but I managed to put together a presentation on SlideRocket illustrating the topics presented to us. I believe in open access and online sharing of information that might prove useful to others so this particular presentation can be accessed online. Please feel free to study it and share it with others. Once again, I’d like to thank Byrdie Franco and the DFW Hispanic Communicators organization for making me part of the panel.

Latina Bloggers: Rise of the Mami Blogueras Part 2

Rise of the Real Mom spending graph

As mentioned on my last blog post, Latina Bloggers: Rise of the Mami Blogueras Part 1, moms have strong purchasing power and their consumer behavior is based around their family, lifestyle and life experiences. The above graph was researched by Advertising Age and you can see that the top three purchasing influences are personal care, clothing and books. Marketers need to develop strategical campaigns that will help drive brand loyalty and product purchases for each of these purchasing influences. The greatest challenge lies in capturing the interest of the Latina moms and that’s where the mami blogueras comes in. Mami blogueras not only post product information and reviews but also personal experiences and how it involves the everyday lives of their families. Marketers are now taking a closer look at the mami blogueras as they utilize their blogs to monitor product satisfaction and to encourage personal product reviews to boost overall popularity. One perfect example is General Mill’s QueRicaVida, a site focusing on Latina moms and families. They celebrated its re-launch by inviting Hispanic journalists and bloggers to a special gala in Miami and of course the very special guests are the mami blogueras because they are the key element in QueRicaVida’s online media campaigns.

Latina Bloggers: Rise of the Mami Blogueras Part 1

Hispanic mom and daughter

A recent conference focusing on successful women bloggers held in New York City called the BlogHer Conference 2010 with the support of LATISM (Latinos in Social Media) is proof that now more than ever Latina bloggers have the ability to utilize online media, control content, gather information and be involved with communities of shared interests. One particular niche that caught my interest are the Latina mommy bloggers or the “mami blogueras.” After some time researching I can see why the mami blogueras are becoming the ultimate resources for parenting tips, shopping, cooking and family care.

“Be Counted, Represent”: Voto Latino and MALDEF use online media to promote the 2010 Census to young Latinos

Nina Sky encouraging young Latinos to vote

This year, the government is really stressing the American population to fill out the 2010 Census which I think is important considering today’s economic shift. According to the website, the information the census collects helps to determine how more than $400 billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure and services like hospitals,  job training centers, schools, senior centers, bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects as well as emergency services. This will help increase employment and reboot the economy with a more confident consumer market. (more…)

Frustrated over lack of news media coverage of the strike in Puerto Rico but social media provided the news.

Puerto Ricans rallied to protest against massive layoffs (Primera Hora/Andre Kang)

Puerto Ricans rallied to protest against massive layoffs (Primera Hora/Andre Kang)

It was a tremendous site, thousands of Puerto Ricans rallied in front of the Plaza de las Americas to protest a decision that would further worsen the already unstable Puerto Rican economy. Earlier last week, the Governor of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuno, proposed budget cuts that would eliminate 13,000 jobs in an attempt to alleviate a $3.2 billion budget gap. Of course, the people are frustrated enough with the lack of jobs as it is. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Puerto Rico’s unemployment rate exceeds 15 percent. Some analysts expect the layoffs to increase that rate to at least 17 percent. So yesterday a rally was staged to send a message to the government, “enough is enough, no more job cuts!”

However, where was the news media that should be covering this? This is the frustration that really got to me. Here we have the citizens of Puerto Rico who are fighting to keep their jobs in an economy that has yet to recover from the recession yet their messages were barely broadcasted on television. To be honest, I got better news coverage from my followers on Twitter than from television or major news sites. I have been reading up to date news from those who are living in Puerto Rico via Twitter. They provided links to news updates, minute by minute activities and picture uploads. In Facebook, I was also kept in the loop of what’s going on as well, Lisa Castro who is on the Facebook fanpage Being Latino offered great news snippets, videos and pics to keep members such as myself updated. What’s great about the coverage on Twitter and Facebook is that you can communicate in real time with those who are covering the protest as well as those that are following it. Once again, social media has proven to be an exceptional media tool to aggregate and disseminate information and communicate with others in real time.

If you want more information about the protest that occurred in Puerto Rico, check out Primera Hora, they posted up to the minute updates, video clips and pictures.
