TOURISTIC PORT OF ROME, FIUMICINO, ITALY - OCTOBER 18, 2014: MV Brigitte Bardot, a former research vessel acquired by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 2011, is seen in the touristic port of Rome in October 2014. The vessel was renamed after the French actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot and was used by Sea Shepherd to disrupt Japanese whaling operations in the Southern Ocean. The ship was damaged by a rogue wave of 11 m (36.1 ft) while pursuing the Japanese whaling fleet off the western coast of Australia on 28 December 2011. Was later expelled from Fiji and criticized by the New Zealand Coastguard for failing to respond to a distress call. Sea Shepherd ultimately sold the vessel to a new owner in Mexico.
