I Left Pieces of Myself Behind

Metamorphosis came from looking forward, trying to understand the person emerging from everything I had been. I Left Pieces of Myself Behind turns backwards. It asks me to acknowledge that transformation is not only about what we become, but also what we can no longer carry with us. Alas, I have left pieces of myself everywhere. In friendships that became memories. In rooms I will never enter again. In people who still remember a version of me I can barely recognise. In dreams I once held so tightly and somehow learned to release. In photographs that have become proof that I once inhabited a life that no longer feels entirely mine. Some of those versions of me were afraid. Some desperately wanted to belong. I feel every bit of sadness for losing them, but I am filled with happiness. I hope they know how much I love them all for carrying me as far as they could.
