The Last People Pleaser
by Papali
"The Last People Pleaser" explores the invisible violence of emotional dumping and chronic self-sacrifice. The stitched mouth symbolizes the silence of those who fear rejection more than suffering. The multiplying eyes represent a fractured identity shaped by constant judgment and the desperate need to satisfy everyone. The trash bin resting above the head is not a symbol of worthlessness, but of the emotional waste that others repeatedly unload onto a person who never learned to say no. Created with colored pencils, markers, and oil pastels on paper, this work questions how compassion, when stripped of boundaries, can slowly become a form of self-erasure. They believed love had to be earned. So they carried other people's grief, endured every insult, forgave every wound, and buried every word they longed to say. Their silence became a place where others emptied their anger, disappointment, and the burdens they could no longer bear. The trash bin above their head never belonged to them. It was simply where everyone discarded the things they couldn't carry within themselves. "My mind became a place for everything others refused to keep. Their bitter words. Their bad days. Their aimless anger. Layer by layer, it all collected inside me, until I overflowed with things that were never mine to carry." With every act of self-sacrifice, another eye opened, not to see the world, but to search for someone else's approval. Until one day, they could no longer tell which thoughts were truly their own, and which had been planted there by everyone else. "Everywhere I look, someone is watching me. Waiting to see where I'll fail, where I'll disappoint them, where I won't be enough. So I stay alert. Always measuring myself against everyone else's expectations, while my own happiness has long been lost in the crowd of these endless eyes." My mouth was stitched shut with the thread of silence and the needle of fear, the fear of being judged. Every time I wanted to say, "No more." the thread was pulled even tighter. Now I'm exhausted... Exhausted from being everyone's emotional dumping ground. Exhausted from being seen, but never truly heard. I wish I had learned how to say "no" before I learned to believe that love had to be earned.
