It Called My Name and Took Over

by Papali

Does anyone begin life with a monster beside them? Or with a nightmare already wearing a face? There was no devouring in the beginning. Everything started with a tiny crack. A fracture in perception, in emotion, in the fragile boundary between reality and the mind. They never realized what was happening. Everything seemed ordinary. Only something deep inside had begun to shift. The shadow was patient. It waited until fear became a pattern, doubt became the rhythm of every step, and silence became its native tongue. Time passed, and the reflection in the mirror no longer belonged to the same person. The face staring back looked less like a human and more like a terrifying hallucination. That tiny crack had become a vast fracture. The shadow called my name. It had traced the cracks in my mind and already knew the way in. The moment I answered, it no longer needed to follow me. It had memorized every entrance. First, it devoured my certainty. Then my memories. And finally, my identity. I did not disappear because the shadow was stronger. I disappeared because I was wounded. Because I was fractured. Because the voice that destroyed me sounded exactly like my own.
