The Sleepless Clerk

The Sleepless Clerk

by Papali

He used to measure his life in coffee spoons and office hours. But when the nights stretched without mercy, he stopped measuring. Sleep abandoned him. It wasn’t just exhaustion anymore, it was corrosion. His bloodshot eyes became lanterns in the dark, glowing red with the fever of insomnia. The office walls melted into shadows, the paper stacks turned to mountains of ash. He whispered to himself: Can’t sleep. Can’t sleep. In the blur of night he remembered a truth: I was human. But the memory slipped away, like smoke in his trembling hands. The mirror betrayed him. The face staring back was no longer his own. Hollow cheeks, sickly colors, a stranger’s smile painted where his once was. He wrote it on the walls, etched it into his soul: I was human. But now he walks only in silence, a clerk without an end of shift, doomed to count the hours of a night that never closes its eyes.
