I had watched hummingbird hawk-moths visit the flowers in my parents' garden every summer since childhood. For years, I believed they were tiny hummingbirds. Photographing one proved far more difficult than simply watching. Their flight is remarkably fast, and they rarely pause for more than a fraction of a second. It took patience, practice, and many attempts before I learned how to anticipate their movements. In time, they seemed to accept my presence, allowing me to come close enough to capture this quiet moment in constant motion. Some encounters are won through silence rather than speed.
