01. Lucanus cervus
The first encounter. Observed in Burgundy, France, in May 2018. A male stag beetle landed on our lunch table without warning. We watched him in silence for a few minutes before he disappeared as suddenly as he had arrived. I photographed him that day. Looking back, this brief encounter marked the true beginning of Synthetic Taxonomy. It was also the moment I discovered macro photography—not as a way of documenting insects, but as a way of noticing them.
