12. Zoropsis spinimana

Over the past few years, this species has gradually replaced the giant house spiders that once inhabited my home, following its steady northward expansion across France. Because they are primarily nocturnal, they are often easier to observe during the day, when they rest quietly. This female, her abdomen swollen with what was likely a clutch of eggs, fell from a patio door as I opened it. Momentarily stunned, she remained still just long enough for me to make this portrait before continuing on her way. Some encounters are simply offered to us.
