In the Still of the Night
by aqueous
Childhood fears rarely leave through the front door. They slip into the walls, settle beneath the floorboards, and grow quieter with age. As children, we imagine monsters hiding in the darkness beyond our bedroom windows. We pull the blankets tighter, believing the night is watching. Eventually we learn there are no creatures waiting in the shadows, yet the feeling remains. In the Still of the Night explores how those early fears evolve rather than disappear. The glowing figures seem suspended between worlds, drawn toward a brilliant center they cannot fully understand. Around them, fragments of a dark forest emerge and dissolve, echoing memories that are never completely clear. The floating orbs act as witnesses, reminders of moments once feared and never entirely forgotten. As adults, the darkness no longer represents imaginary monsters. It becomes uncertainty, loss, loneliness, failure, or the parts of ourselves we struggle to confront. The fears have changed shape, but they still gather in the quiet hours when distractions fade and the mind wanders inward. The luminous blue light at the center suggests both danger and possibility, a confrontation with the unknown that each figure must face. This piece reflects the tension between fear and growth. The night is no longer something to escape. It is a place where old anxieties resurface, asking to be acknowledged. In that stillness, we discover that the shadows we feared as children were never chasing us. They were waiting for us to understand them.
