Peacock

The peacock is probably the oldest known ornamental bird. They stand out because of their colored plumage and the large ornamental feathers of the males. Originally kept in parks and gardens for their beauty, roast peacock soon became a culinary status symbol. In addition, the feathers were very popular as a 'dry bouquet' or decoration of women's hats. There are people who believe that finding a peacock feather brings good luck. In the case of the blue peacock, the hen takes care of her young alone. Male and female usually make their nest in a hole in the ground between the bushes. But sometimes also in a thick tree, in an empty bird of prey nest, or even on a building. The nest is covered with some dry leaves or grass. The hen usually lays four to eight near-white eggs. They are not all laid at once. Only after the fourth egg does the hen begin to brood. She does that for about 28 days. Chicks are born with feathers, not down like many other chicks. Soon the young peacock gets a crown of feathers on its head. The roosters only get a drag tail after the third year, and it is not fully grown until it is 6 years old.
