Meerkat

You can claim Meerkat for your collection. It is the sixth piece from the Lighten up after the dark animals editions. The meerkat is a small predator. Also called "goblin", it inhabits all parts of the Kalahari in southern Africa, especially on dry open plains. They live in groups of up to thirty. The meerkat mainly eats insects, spiders, scorpions and snails. Meerkats live in the burrows of ground squirrels. They expand these burrows into tunnel systems, sometimes up to a surface of 15 m². An adult animal can excavate its own weight in sand in barely 10 seconds. Special rooms are constructed in the caves: bedrooms, maternity rooms and even toilets. The toilets are cleaned by the dung beetles they live with. At night they retreat to their burrows, as the nights can be bitterly cold and the dangers lurking outside are great. Meerkats live in a hierarchy. Each individual in their group has a separate job. Some animals are watchmen and are on the lookout. There is always at least one guard active in the group, guards always stand higher than the rest so that they have a better view, they support themselves on the hind legs and on the tail. They can give different alarm signals: a whistling sound, which means 'watch out', and a barking sound, after which the warn and the rest of the group run for their lives. Many other animal species also benefit from the warnings of the sentinel of the desert. There are also hunters and babysitters who keep an eye on the little ones when their parents are not there. In case of danger, all meerkats dig fanatically; they do this to create a cloud of dust that drives the predator to flight. If the attacker persists, they perform mock and real attacks, spitting and biting. When they are on the losing side and lying on their backs, they show their teeth and lash out aggressively with their claws. In groups, they can attack animals larger than themselves. Each population has its own sleeping tradition: the hours at which the animals are awake differ per group.
