A Trace of Memory

A Trace of Memory

by Alexander Seleznyov

"Memory is a form of forgetting." — Jorge Luis Borges At first, a memory feels complete. Sharp, detailed, almost tangible. You remember everything: the place, the light, the movement. Then the sounds begin to fade, motion follows, and color slowly dries out, like a photograph left in the sun. What remains is only a fragment. And at some point, you can no longer tell where you saw it, whether you were really there, or whether you are remembering someone else's memory as your own. Until even a feeling begins to slip away.
