Twilight Wanderer

Story: The Dead Sea. Amusing that it's still called a sea. Its waters recede every year, and perhaps soon the sea will vanish entirely. Now so shallow one can see from one shore to the other. Yet, called "Dead" for a reason. There's not a hint of life anywhere. A kingdom of salt supreme - from the salt formatted ground resembling frozen wax to the water saturated with salt to the limit. Even the air carries a salty aroma, mixed with the echoes of millennia-old despair. I stood by the water and looking at my reflection. No sound, no gust of wind, utter calm. It felt as though time had stopped here and the world around had lost the will to live. Even the light from my lantern, casting fiery hues all around, couldn't bring life to the scene. Slowly, indifference began to wrap around me. "I've been looking for you," I said to the reflection of a suddenly emerging dragon. Its body was entirely made of bones, seeming devoid of life, but eyes sparkled with pure white fire, suggesting a soul still burning within. Despite the lantern's glow, the bones remained as white as if they were woven from death itself. "Many seek me, but only a few dares step on this salty shore," it voiced, lowering its head closer to mine. "What is it that you desire?" "Power." The dragon laughed. "You seek it here, amidst the dead waters and endless salt? Amidst despair? An interesting choice." As his laughter subsided, his bones lit up with a violet flame, wavering from a non-existent wind. "However, despair can be your guide. Once you recognize and accept your weakness, you can learn to turn it to your advantage." He paused. "Let's see if you succeed," he whispered, slowly spreading his wings...
