"Shirdal" ("Lion-Eagle")

This image shows a column capital from Persepolis, Iran, known as "Shirdal" ("Lion-Eagle"). I captured this image during my trip to Shiraz and later combined it with motion effects. Shirdal was a mythical creature in ancient Iran. Shirdal in Iranian mythology is the same as the Griffin in Western mythology. Iranians believed that if its shadow fell upon someone, that person would be blessed with good fortune. The Shirdal is a combination of a lion (shir) and a dal, a bird from the vulture family.
