Bugs in the Sand
by Violet Bond
Life retreats to the river at this time of year. The rain has stoped and the rivers calm and there is a hush over the wild. A time of rest, to lay a moment before the torrents return with the monsoon. This spot looked so cool and calm but the sand alive! Full of all manor of beetles and insects. So many that as I lay my head down all I could hear was a deafening clicking. They started to crawl into my hair and over my skin, I was part of the landscape now after all, so much life at the waters edge. An assisted self portrait photographed by my husband Alex Ernst in a natural void in the sand made by the receding water. Created on Dalabon Country in the Northern Territory. Australia
